Communications Specialist

Position Description
 
WWF-Canada seeks a dynamic, bilingual, and well-rounded Communications Specialist with strong writing and strategic communications experience.  The ideal candidate will be an experienced writer, with the ability to synthesize complex information into compelling narratives.  A background in journalism—particularly science or politics reporting—would provide a solid foundation.

As a key member of our national communications team, the candidate will work closely with communication, social media, digital and marketing colleagues to deliver on conservation, public engagement, and fundraising communications objectives.  An energized individual who thrives in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment, you are looking for a job opportunity that lets your personality and your skills do the talking.
 
Key Responsibilities

  • Develop a strong, dynamic and integrated national conservation narrative for WWF-Canada and identify and leverage opportunities to position the Organization’s voice and brand in the Canadian marketplace.
  • Develop and lead the execution of communication strategies, plans and activities in support of WWF-Canada’s conservation priorities, in consultation with conservation leads.  This will include:
    • Strategically identifying audiences and cultivating relationships with key communications influencers (reporters, bloggers, etc.);
    • Developing key messages;
    • Planning and managing communication tactics leveraging a range of mediums (stories, photos, videos, blogs, infographics, reports etc.) and channels (traditional media, social media, WWF communication properties, etc.);
    • Identifying and managing resources to execute strategies (including internal staff and external vendors) in coordination with key members of the national marketing and communications team.
  • Provide writing capacity and expertise (speeches, Op-Eds, web copy, blog entries to support national WWF-Canada’s blog presence, etc.)  to the Marketing and Communications team to support priority communications initiatives.
  • Protect the WWF-Canada image and brand and provide capacity in crisis communications for all WWF-Canada programs.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary degree, preferably in the areas of journalism, English, professional writing or communications.
  • At least 4 years’ experience in a communications, marketing, fundraising, journalism or writing role with demonstrated skill and ability to manage complex scientific, political, or technical content.
  • Proven ability to work within a collaborative team environment and as a consultant.
  • Ability to work with senior management and offices in different locations.
  • Knowledge of basic principles of sound project management.
  • Experience working in a conservation environment is an asset.
  • Media trained is an asset.

This is a 1 year contract replacing a maternity leave and is based out of the Toronto office.
