Community Specialist, Nunavut

The Arctic is changing at a record pace, warming at twice the average global rate.  As the ice melts, polar bears, whales and caribou are facing the loss of their unique habitat.  Industrial pressure is also increasing creating tough decisions for local communities who often have economic development challenges.  WWF has the opportunity to work with communities to protect Arctic ecosystems and species while building a truly sustainable economy.  WWF has supported Arctic conservation over several decades.  WWF-Canada will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2017.

Over the next five years, the WWF-Canada Arctic Program will continue to focus on safeguarding iconic Arctic species (caribou, polar bears and ice-whales) and their habitats while respecting the needs of Northern communities.  WWF-Canada is also embarking on exciting new program areas to demonstrate the possible with sustainable fisheries as well as habitat-friendly renewable energy projects.  WWF-Canada will work closely with communities to ensure their voices are heard in the more frequent and more complex regulatory processes that guide industrial development.
