A 7-year-old passionate about polar bears raises $910 for WWF! WWF July 4, 2013 Share: Share This Page: Share with Facebook Share via Twitter Share via Linkedin Share in email Two and a half years ago, the Hutton family visited the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Florida, an outing which inspired 7-year-old Sean’s love of marine life. He knows all about plankton and whales, but his favourite animal is the polar bear. Sean is on the autism spectrum, but is very high-functioning , and his mom Tania credits his autism with helping him remember facts about the things that interest him — like polar bears! His interest further encouraged and informed by his parents (mom Tania works in conservation and dad Jason is a teacher), Sean connected the dots between greenhouse gases and global warming, and its effect on the polar bear’s Arctic home. And he wanted to do something about it. He noticed that lots of people drive to school, even when they live close, and he knew that cars create pollution, which melts the ice and makes it difficult for polar bears to hunt seals. So last January, Sean organized a walk-to-school day for students and teachers at Holy Trinity Catholic Elementary School in Guelph, Ontario. The elementary school rallied around Sean’s idea, with older students making posters to advertise the event and student council encouraging students to donate to Sean’s cause.
