Earth Hour needs an anthem, and it ain't writing itself WWF March 12, 2012 Share: Share This Page: Share with Facebook Share via Twitter Share via Linkedin Share in email Despite having heard ‘Oh Canada’ at the start of my every school day and on many weekends during Hockey Night in Canada, it never fails to give me goosebumps. One of my favourite ‘I am Canadian’ moments of all time was taking to the streets in Waterloo, Ontario to sing our national song with hundreds of others after Sidney Crosby’s gold-medal, game-winning goal in overtime at the 2010 Winter Olympics. The familiar notes have a way of motivating, provoking emotion and triggering memories like almost nothing else. So here at WWF-Canada, we started to think “Every country has its own anthem, but why isn’t there one for the whole planet? Something we can ALL get behind?” and the idea for the Earth Hour Anthem was born. Team Earth Hour is writing an anthem for the world to hear and sing this Earth Hour. But who are WE to be the songwriters of this anthem, when so many of you are WAY more talented/creative/clever than we are? (“Don’t be a bummer, get rid of your hummer.” I’m totally serious – this came up in a brainstorming meeting. We need help.) The anthem contest – How it works We invite Canadians to write a song lyric expressing your love for the planet and why you think it’s important that we protect it, in 140 characters or less, and submit your entries on WWF’s Facebook page. The submissions are then voted on by the public, and the awesome songwriter Andrew Huang will write and record the final piece. Everyone who submits a lyric will be entered to win a Grand Prize of an X Series Electric Scooter from EMMO, courtesy of the AIR MILES®*Reward Program. Canadian singer/songwriter and Earth Hour Anthem composer, Andrew Huang. (c) Andrew Huang Once you’ve made your submission, be sure to share it with your friends. The top ranked lyrics will have a better chance to make it into the final anthem. So get writing! You can submit lyrics until March 18. The Event Once the anthem is composed and recorded, we will share in on our Facebook and Twitter pages so that you can learn it before the big day. If you’re in Toronto, you can even come and hear it performed live at the Team Earth Hour Pep Rally at The Distillery Historic District, Saturday March 31st at 7:30 pm. See you then!
